Do rats like cold weather?
Rats don't really like the cold weather, but they don't hibernate like some other small mammals do. Mice don't hibernate either. In
fact, out of all the small mammals you might come across, only a few of them sleep their entire winter away. Hedgehogs are one example,
dormice are another, and rats are one more.
During the warmer months, the rats have everything they need in the great outdoors. They can find a rock pile to burrow beneath, or fallen
logs. There is plenty of food about, plenty of shelter from passing predators, and life is pretty peachy. That's why the warmer weather is
always prime weather for having babies - everything is nice, warm and relatively safe.
During the winter, on the other hands, things get really hard. There is very little food about. Many animals just don't like the cold enough to
come out, just like humans in some ways, and the rats will need to find another way to find food. Outdoor water sources might freeze over. Outdoor
shelters are no longer warm enough to keep rats alive, particularly if there are young to take care of, and that's when most homeowners find that
their homes are invaded by rats. The rodents have nowhere else to go in the cold weather and break into human residences instead.
That's why people believe that rats hibernate during the winter. They are seldom seldom seen outside. The truth is, they're more than likely
hiding out in human attics, but those people aren't aware of the infestation yet. Perhaps it's time to check your attic for rat holes and signs of activity?
