What are some humane ways to kill a rat?
If you want to deal with a rat infestation the right way, the humane approach is definitely the way forward. We
commend you for this also. There are so many homeowners out there who still resort to really inhumane and cruel
methods to remove the rat problem from their property. There really isn’t any need for it.
The most humane and effective way to deal with a rat infestation is with lethal snap traps. We know that’s probably not
quite the humane answer you had expected to hear, but even live cage traps have their disadvantages. One of these is that
relocated rats very rarely survive being relocated. Not only that, the rat itself will often become rather stressed in the
live cage traps, and will throw themselves around. This will result in some rather nasty injuries, and once again, will
prevent the rat from having a good time once it has been released back into the wild.
The snap traps, although still resulting in the animal’s death, will bring it about in the most humane way possible. The rat will
not need to go through any harm or stress before it dies, the action making everything instant and automatic. It’s much more humane
than those awful glue strips. We have seen rats and mice get themselves into some awful states trying to break themselves free from
those.
With snap traps, you will need to make sure you’re checking them regularly, and that you’re placing them out of the way of animals
such as cats and dogs. You certainly don’t want to accidentally catch Mrs. Puss Puss’ paws. You also don’t want to accidentally trap
any child-fingers either. Use your head and common sense when placing the traps around your property. Bait isn’t overly important,
although we have found that peanut butter works rather well. These rodents will actually eat their own feces if they need to, so
don’t panic if you don’t have the ‘perfect’ bait.
