What property modifications will keep down rat populations?
There are plenty of small changes you can make to your home to ensure that
no rats get inside it. Keeping your home well maintained is a great thing to
start with. You should take a peek on the outside to ensure there are no
patches of damage which could act as poorly hidden rat doors into your
humble abode.
The tiny little space underneath the doors in your house, for example, may
not seem like muck to you, but a small rat, a young rat perhaps, could
easily slide beneath it and get into your property. If there is a larger
space than 1/4 of an inch, you can use metal thresholds to add some bulk to
the main frame of the door. This will close up the gap a little, although
you will want to be sure your measurements are precise. These metal
flashings can also help to prevent the rodents from chewing on the door,
which they have also been known to do.
If you are finding that rats are getting into the foundations of your home,
rather than in the main bulk of the building, you can make some small
adaptions to make life harder for the rodents to get in. You can make a
“curtain wall” of sorts, using 1/4 inch steel mesh wiring, and when this is
used either over the wall (and appropriately fastened at both the top and
the bottom), or beneath a final layer of finishing plaster, you will have
placed a sturdy obstacle in the way of the rats that they won’t be able to
chew their way through.
The fact of the matter is that copper mesh and steel mesh wiring can all be
used, along with hardware cloth, to form a stronger layer of protection.
Used with other materials, chewing and gnawing may still occur, but the rats
will only be able to get so far until they are unable to get further.
