Do rats carry rabies?
As a general rule, it is very, very rare for a rat to have rabies, and it is even rarer for rats to pass that rabies
virus on to adults, and also other animals. In fact, there are quite a few small mammals and rodents that are often
associated with rabies, wrongly. Mice, rats, chipmunks, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and squirrels are rarely
transmitters of the virus.
Just because rabies isn't a concern with rats, however, doesn't mean that you shouldn’t worry. There are a number of
dangerous diseases that can be passes from not only rat to rat and other animal, cats and dogs included, but also from
rat to human too. These can be passed on in a number of ways - via direct contact, scratches and bites, even contamination
from urine and feces into water and food sources, and even soil and other non-biological matter too. These diseases might not
affect the average, healthy adult human, but for minors - small children, and also the elderly, as well as those who are already
suffering from another disease or condition - the disease can be very dangerous indeed, and if left untreated, can also prove to
be fatal.
With many of the diseases associated with rats first coming with cold and flu-like symptoms, it is no unusual for rat associated
diseases to be diagnosed at first, and this is why we would advise seeking medical advice if you fall unwell and have noticed a rat
infestation in your home recently. This is even more so the case if you have been in contact with the rat - bites or scratches, for
example.
