Why do rats exist?
Rats might seem like pointless creatures. To some people, they are. PETA
guidelines have shown that rats
get treated quite badly in laboratory tests, for example, not requiring the
same kind of humane treatment that other animals must have when being tested
on. Just one example of this is that rats don't need anesthetic when
surgical procedures are being carried away. It's quite brutal.
Rats, despite what you might think, do have their place on the planet. On
the side of one perspective, these rodents clean up after other animals.
They are scavengers and they usually eat off the carcasses of other animals,
perhaps those killed by cars in the road. They’ll also clean up when other
animals are finished with a carcass. When one animal doesn't think there is
anything good left to eat on the bones, rats will think otherwise and still
tuck in. Technically, you could look at rats as nature’s way of cleaning up.
That’s basically what scavengers - rats, mice, raccoons, opossums, etc. -
do.
Rats don’t actually eat that many other animals, but, being opportunistic
hunters, they will prey on smaller animals, such as mice and small snakes,
as well as insects. They are food for a number of other animals, on the
other hand, so if you were to take rats out of the equation, these other
animals would suffer. These include predators in the air such as hawks, owls
and eagles, as well as those
on the ground - foxes, dogs and cats (although rarely cats), coyotes, and
more.
Rats exist because they clean up, and because they provide food for other
animals. All animals have their place in the ecosystem, and that’s why the
right way to deal with a ra problem is a humane way. This does not include
trapping and releasing, or poison. Snap traps are humane. They kill the rat
immediately, without it needing to go through undue pain or suffering.
Releasing a trapped rat somewhere miles away is more
than likely going to resort in its death, and the same goes for poison,
except poison takes days or weeks to work. It also causes a very slow,
painful and agonizing death.
